With Delhi choking, Companies step in to guard staff from pollution

Many have advised staff to stay indoors, decided to install air purifiers, provide masks to employees and issue health advisories.
Realizing the fact that employees form the backbone of any organization, many corporate have decided to safeguard its employees from Delhi’s menacing pollution even as the unparalleled bout of toxic air since Diwali has saddened Indian and foreign companies.

Corporate head believe the fact that increased level of toxicity may leave irreparable damage to health of individuals and hamper productivity in turn. This may adversely affect the investment plans and further make it difficult to attract international talent. As a temporary solution various corporates have decided to provide masks to employees and installing air purifiers to improvise indoor air quality index as employees are spending considerable amount of time inside the office premise.

“In a fast-growing population, what’s needed is significant investments that ensure improvement in clean air, clean water and sanitation,” said Reckitt Benckiser Global CEO Rakesh Kapoor.

Maruti Suzuki Chairman RC Bhargava said the prevailing pollution in the Capital was “extremely unfortunate”.  A concerted political effort is required,” he said.

MTS India CEO Sergey Savchenko said the situation was getting from bad to worse. “From a business standpoint, if things continue unchecked, it is bound to have a negative impact on the health of employees, their families and also the customers, ultimately leading to an adverse impact on business activities across the value chain.”

Paytm founder & CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma said “Without clean air, we won’t be there. All growth and achievements sound so small in front of sustainable environment.” He believed clean air was far more important than other achievements.

ACTIONS TAKEN BY CORPORATES

Some companies have announced flexible office timings for the time till pollution levels in the region recede to normal. Coca- Cola and many IT companies too have flexi work policy where employees can opt for working from home in situations like this.

Many MNCs have provided masks to its employees and installed air purifiers in their local offices. Panasonic has issued advisory to its employees to stay indoors unless unavoidable. HCL has also advised same to its employees.

Companies do not want to take any chance with respect to their team’s health.
